Cornelius David Krieghoff
1815-1872
Cornelius Krieghoff above all others has become known as
the classic Canadian artist and his works command the highest
prices because of the general vigour and often admirable
quality of his astounding output. He painted a picture every
fortnight for thirty years. There were also an uncounted
number of sketches - most of which were thrown out as waste
paper.
In
more lyrical terms we may say that among the torrent of
his work there were scores of paintings that will always
tell their arcadian stories with timeless compassion and
a total devotion to natural beauty. He was at once a painter's
painter and the delight of his public. Of course such a
prolific and committed artist will always provide targets
to the whole spectrum of today's searching criticism, but
this in itself is an accolade.
